How We Use AI Agents for Security Automation

Security teams are drowning in alerts. The average SOC processes thousands of events per day, and analyst fatigue leads to missed detections and slow response times. AI agents offer a way to handle the repetitive, well-defined portions of security operations so that human analysts can focus on complex investigations.

What We Mean by AI Agents

An AI agent in our context is an autonomous workflow powered by a large language model that can reason about security data, make decisions within defined guardrails, and execute actions through tool integrations. Unlike traditional SOAR playbooks that follow rigid if-then logic, agents can interpret ambiguous situations, ask clarifying questions, and adapt their approach based on context.

Where We Deploy Agents Today

We have integrated AI agents into several operational workflows:

  • Alert triage: An agent reviews incoming SIEM alerts, enriches them with threat intelligence lookups, correlates related events, and assigns a confidence score. Low-confidence alerts are auto-closed with documented reasoning. High-confidence alerts are escalated to analysts with a pre-built investigation summary.
  • Phishing analysis: Reported emails are parsed by an agent that examines headers, extracts and detonates URLs in a sandbox, checks sender reputation, and renders a verdict. Analysts review only the edge cases.
  • Vulnerability prioritization: Scan results are fed to an agent that cross-references CVSS scores with asset criticality, exploitability data from CISA KEV, and network exposure. The output is a prioritized remediation list that accounts for business context.
  • Log analysis during incident response: During active incidents, an agent can rapidly search and summarize large volumes of log data, identifying relevant entries that would take a human analyst hours to find manually.

Guardrails and Safety

Deploying AI agents in security operations requires strict controls:

  • Least-privilege access: Agents operate with the minimum permissions needed for their task. A triage agent can read alerts and write comments but cannot modify firewall rules or disable accounts.
  • Human-in-the-loop for destructive actions: Any action that blocks traffic, isolates a host, or disables an account requires human approval. The agent recommends; the analyst executes.
  • Audit logging: Every decision an agent makes is logged with its reasoning chain, enabling review and continuous improvement.
  • Prompt injection defenses: When agents process user-supplied content like email bodies or log messages, inputs are sanitized to prevent adversarial manipulation of agent behavior.

Results So Far

Since deploying AI agents for alert triage, we have reduced mean time to triage by 74% and cut false positive escalations by over 60%. Analysts report higher job satisfaction because they spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on meaningful investigations.

Lessons Learned

Start small. Pick a single, well-defined workflow with clear success metrics. Build confidence through measurable results before expanding scope. And never lose sight of the fact that AI agents are tools that augment human judgment, not replacements for it. The analyst remains the decision-maker for anything that matters.
